Six Things That Can Be Done To Maximize The Lifespan Of A Power Cord

Blog

Your electronics are useless to you if you don't have the appropriate power cord available to charge your device.

If you don't take care of your power cords, they could easily become damaged and stop working properly. However, you can maximize power cord lifespan by doing the following six things:

Having multiple power cords and not using the same one all the time.

Power cords can wear out prematurely due to constant use. You can make your power cords last longer if you keep several different power cords at different locations. You can keep one at home, one at your workplace, and one in your laptop case or backpack for when you're on the go.

Buying power cords produced by the electronics manufacturer rather than a third party.

While you might be able to find third party power cords that are less expensive, sometimes the most reliable and durable power cords are the ones produced by the original manufacturer of your electronic device. Consider investing in better quality to enjoy longer power cord lifespan.

Plugging in to the closest outlet

Stretching your power cord a long distance makes damage more likely. A power cord running across your floor is more likely to be stepped on, and it could even create a tripping hazard.

Always plug in to the closest possible outlet to avoid putting stress on your power cords unnecessarily.

Not stepping on cords

Take care to avoid stepping on power cords whenever possible. Power cords can be fragile and will become frayed or flattened if they are repeatedly stepped on.

Not putting heavy items on top of cords

When heavy items are placed on power cords, power cords could become damaged and no longer transfer electricity efficiently as they should.

You should never put a heavy item like a stack of books or a furniture item on top of your power cord. You need to organize your interiors so that you don't have to put anything on top of your power cords.

Not leaving power cords lying on the floor

You should get in the habit of storing power cords in a protected area. Keep your power cord up on a table rather than on the floor when you can.

When you are out and about, you should get in the habit of keeping your power cord stored in your laptop case or backpack as much as possible rather than leaving it lying around on the ground.
